In the face of unprecedented challenges posed by climate change, the European Union has embarked on an ambitious journey towards a sustainable and resilient future. The EU Missions on Adaptation to Climate Change and on Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities under Horizon Europe, the EU’s key funding programme for research and innovation, represent significant pillars in this transformative endeavour.

The Missions on Adaptation and on Smart Cities published a brochure showcasing 14 European‑funded Mission projects that show the collaborative spirit, innovation, and commitment required to address the pressing issues of climate change. These projects featured in delve into diverse aspects of adaptation, ranging from using the most advanced IT solutions to assess and monitor climate risks and impacts to leveraging nature as an ally in building green and sustainable solutions to mitigate climate impacts, showcasing the breadth and depth of our collective response.

CLIMAAX has been included among them, with a range of sister projects such as Pathways2Resilience and Valorada, for demonstrating the viability of a more uniform risk assessment model. Below are a few relevant lines coming from the publication:

“There is significant diversity in the ability of regions to carry out risk assessments,” noted Bart van den Hurk from Deltares. “In addition, there might be underpopulated provinces that don’t get much attention, but which nonetheless face significant climate impacts such as extreme flooding.”

“In 2024, a second Open Call will make up to EUR 12 million available for at least 50 regions and communities to implement the CLIMAAX methodological framework” said the project coordinator Frederiek Sperna Weiland. “I hope we see an improvement in climate literacy across all regions.”
